Staying Hydrated in the Heat

Some tips from Lizzy Ott to get you through the summer.

 

I think we can all agree; there’s a lot to love about summer. The beach, the sun, the summer Fridays, the cute linen jumpsuits – the list goes on and on. With all this hot-weather reverie, we can find ourselves sweating more, which can lead to a lower than normal water content. This can be super tough on the body, as water is responsible for transporting fluids and nutrients through the system. Internal dryness, inflammation, and downright discomfort can plague your summer time fun. Here are some tips to stay hydrated through the warmer months:

 

 

Load up on your healthy fats

Coconut oil, chia seeds, salmon, and avocado are a few examples of super nourishing healthy fats.  They’ll lubricate your system, and help your body maintain moisture.

 

Chow down on watery fruits and veggies 

Snack on cucumber, radish, celery, watermelon, strawberries, and citrus. These plants have a high water content and they’re filled with fiber – a killer combo to keep the body in balance.

 

Drink water 

Seems obvious, but it can be so hard to do sometimes. Water helps filter out toxins and bacteria from the system to keep blood and lymph clean. Water also balances digestion and helps our cells to function properly. Make a habit of waking up in the morning and drinking 1-2 glasses of water before you head into anything else. Opt for filtered water if you can (we love Soma). On the other hand, be careful not to guzzle water like it’s air. Our kidneys are responsible for filtering liquids that comes through the body, and if you’re constantly flushing them with water it can make it tough for them to do their job. Aim for the classic recommendation of 8 cups a day, but listen to your body. It’ll know if you need more or less water.  

 

Hydrating herbal teas  

Start a daily ritual of making herbal tea. Chamomile, hibiscus, rose hip, and nettle are a few great ones for warmer weather. Steep for about 30 minutes, then pop ‘em into a mason jar in the fridge for a cooler brew.

 

Incorporate daily gentle stretching and breathing

Take time in the morning to sit, take a few deep inhales and exhales, and gently move your body. Encouraging flow through the body will help to distribute all the good hydration you’re taking in, as well as lower internal inflammation. Inflammation can cause the body to heat up, in turn leaching water and minerals. No fun. Stretching and breathing also promotes a healthy stress response and encourages hormone balance – key for reducing heat in the system.

 
Keeping your insides hydrated will encourage healthier skin. As your skin may tend to get oily in the summer, dehydration can actually cause your surface to produce extra oil to compensate for the internal dryness. Not a fun cycle.
